“Kontroversi were the most awesome support band…you have got to see them to believe them” – DJ Yoda
Imagine Prince, Parliament, New Order and Jamiroquai taking a road trip across the galaxy in a ’59 Cadillac and you’re halfway there…
Kontroversi are an electro-funk duo from Cambridge, consisting of “Mr Margaret Scratcher” (Mark Sutton) on keyboards, synthesizers and drum machines, and “Lionclub” (Leonardo Robarts) on guitar and lead vocals.
Having known each other for many years through the music scene, they recently collaborated to produce their own unique sound which they have dubbed ‘Cadillac Funk’.
Singer, songwriter and musical innovator Leo Robarts became interested in music from a young age and taught himself to sing and play guitar. He first cut his teeth on the live circuit, playing Download festival in 2008 with his first band “Caimbo” and has recently been touring the U.K. and Europe with contemporary rock band “Sweet Crisis”.
After discovering and getting lost in the club scene for a few years, Leo developed a rich desire to explore and push the boundaries between a DJ and a live band, and Mark Sutton turned out to be the element he was searching for.
Mark has been involved in multiple musical projects for most of his life – from the downtempo sample based hip-hop instrumental material put out as 4teenth, through to the house and disco edits focussed Quatre-Vingt Cinq (QVC), and of course the eclectic DJ sets as Mr Margaret Scratcher. He has played keys from a very young age, and naturally succumbed to the allure of sequencers and synths in the mid to late 90s. Now his role in Kontroversi gives him an opportunity to combine his years of studio production experience with the excitement of live performance.
The band have been travelling the U.K supporting DJ Yoda on his Stranger Things tour and are set to release their debut E.P later this year with Bristol based label Ghetto Funk.
“Cadillac Funk” coming soon…….
